Closed Landfills
Focus Environmental Services Limited (FES) were successful in winning the contract from Nelson City Council to complete an environmental assessment of the Atawhai Closed Landfill in Nelson. This project involved the investigation of the existing cap/cover across the landfill for both thickness, composition and contaminated status. The completion of instantaneous surface monitoring (ISM) for landfill gas emission, a visual inspection of the surface cover and adjacent shoreline, sub-ground headspace monitoring for landfill gas, installation and monitoring of ten landfill gas monitoring wells, and an initial assessment of the quality of the underlying leachate/groundwater and potential tidal influence was also undertaken.
Following this site investigation, a Site Monitoring and Management Plan was prepared to provide site-specific management procedures required to mitigate the potential effects of settlement, exposure to contaminated soils and/or refuse, landfill gas and leachate during service maintenance, soil disturbance and site development activities at the Atawhai Closed Landfill site.
Following several monitoring events over an initial two-year monitoring period FES derived site specific trigger levels that have been incorporated into the SMMP for the closed landfill site.
As outlined in the SMMP, visual inspections, instantaneous surface monitoring (ISM) gas emission surveys, landfill gas and leachate monitoring has been and is currently been undertaken by Focus Environmental Services Limited.
Stockpile Materials Testing
Focus Environmental Services Limited undertakes regular sampling and characterisation of imported spoil materials from various developments across Auckland at the yard of one of New Zealand’s largest infrastructure and civil contractors.
The stockpiled materials are first inspected for any visual or olfactory evidence of contamination prior to the collection of representative samples in accordance with the Contaminated Land Management Guidelines No.5 (MfE, 2011) and urgently analysed.
Following the analytical results, the materials are characterised as Cleanfill, Managed Fill, or Landfill and compared to the acceptance criteria for the chosen fill facilities in the Auckland region to allow for appropriate disposal. This is all completed within a 3-5-day timeframe, allowing the client to quickly move the imported material through their yard.
Asbestos Surveying Projects
Focus Environmental Services has worked on numerous commercial building surveying projects, for both standalone companies, as well as national businesses. One of those projects involved the completion of Asbestos Building Surveys, the preparation of Asbestos Registers and Asbestos Management Plans for sixteen National Storage Centres across both the North & South Island of New Zealand.
In addition to commercial building surveys Focus Environmental Services also undertake numerous domestic building surveys, for both individual residential owners and landlords as well as for larger projects as part of the governments special housing schemes. Currently we are involved in both the Mangere and Oranga Housing Development with Homes Land Community and Piratahi.
Whether our investigations are for demolition or management purposes, the asbestos services provided by FES allows the PCPU to make informed decisions which ensure the safety and well being of all involved.
